Are bluray DVDs really worth it?

I don't have a bluray player. But I heard a lot of hype about these things. My dad tells me they're just a overpriced way to look slightly better. Should I consider trying them or not. I love movies. P.S I normally really don't feel much difference between a big and small TV, or fullscreen and widescreen that much more than just making myself feel a little different.
