Can ovarian cysts be cancerous? ?

I am 50 years old with a cyst on my left ovary of about 4 centimeters. My Dr. has ordered a special ultrasound test to determine what the cyst consists of. If it consists of "bad stuff" he recommends a complete hysterectomy. I failed to ask my Dr. what he meant by "bad stuff." Could that have meant cancer?
