How to plan a potluck reception?

My boyfriend and I are having a quick courthouse marriage. The wedding for us wasn't the fun part(getting up in front of everybody saying our vows. I know I would screw them up) But we still wanted to cut the cake together and have a nice time with family. We want to have a potluck reception. We didn't want presents or anything like that we were just going to tell everyone to bring something to eat or drink. Has anyone done this? How did it work out? Should I make suggestions for people?
